Upset winner at junior squash event

THE Coffs One Day Enduro has come to an end.

It was very pleasing to see the number of participants coming from adjoining centres giving local juniors some real challenges throughout the day.

Coffs Harbour juniors picked up three division wins and four runners-up awards so there were plenty of smiles all round.

Division one was an upset as Peter Becker toppled front runner Luke Kocon-Fredericks in five thrilling games.

This was Peter's first tournament win and he came from behind to win the fourth game and square at two games all.

In the deciding game Peter opened an early lead which Luke couldn't claw back and under pressure went for more winners.

Division two went to Samuel Moriz of Coffs Harbour over Oliver Schirmer of Ballina.

The boys had a great match with Sam taking the first two games before Oliver started a strong recovery to take the third.

However, Sam started stronger in the fourth game to run out a comfortable winner.

There was an accidental injury scare in the closing stages of the third game and the sportsmanship by both Sam and Oliver earned applause.

In division six, Jacob Gough of Nambucca Heads proved the most consistent among the new players.

Coffs Harbour's Lucia Clifford showed great improvement throughout the day and stepped up to make a real contest in the final.

Lucia finished a close second after losing the fourth game in a marathon tie break, 19/17.

Special awards were presented to Barton Fletcher for sportsmanship and Joshua Walmsley received the encouragement award.
