Support for no interest loans

THE State Government is funding administrative support to the No Interest Loan Scheme in the Coffs Harbour area.

The NILS program supports the provision of no-interest, no-fee loans for essential household goods such as a washing machine or refrigerator, or domestic medical equipment.

"Nambucca Valley Inc NILS has been successful in their application to receive $37,045.56 to fund costs associated with providing no interest loans," said Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser.

"NILS workers sit down with applicants and work with them to identify their needs and work through a manageable repayment plan.

"No interest loans are not charity handouts. The loan recipient pays the loan off in 12 to 18 months and is only eligible to apply for a new loan once the existing loan has been successfully repaid.

"NILS offers pride and achievement, supports employment and study and helps link people to services including legal aid, financial counselling, food banks, national, state and local government agencies, addiction counselling, ombudsmen and domestic violence services.

"Computers, support for children, babysitting to enable parent attendance at training courses, whatever the loan is for, it's helping battlers get ahead."
