Lightning strike on airport as hail falls on the beaches

THE Coffs Harbour airport control centre was evacuated earlier this afternoon after a lightning strike triggered emergency alarms inside the tower.

Staff followed safety procedures and evacuated for a short time after the alarms sounded.

Air Services Australia said a lightning strike happened somewhere on the airfield near the tower and around the same time alarms sounded inside the building.

The tower was unmanned for around 25 minutes and no flights were impacted.

Further north and small hail falls were recorded near Moonee Beach as the storm front passed over the coast.

With the return of blue skies since the Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled severe thunderstorm and wind warnings for the Coffs Coast.
