Station Square installing $200,000 worth of solar panels
STATION Square shopping centre management is installing a 100kw solar panel system to save energy and possibly make money in the future by selling power back to Ergon.
The centre's owner, The Green Group Companies, has invested $200,000 in the system which will be up and running next week.
Centre manager Doug Sanderson said installing the system means they will use less external energy and that will be good for the environment.
"The timing is right for us to reinvest in our business and the returns would be beneficial to the centre's income.
The future will possibly see the centre selling its energy to Ergon.
"In the next four to five years, when we decide to expand the system to 400kw, we will be classed as a provider which will enable us to sell the energy back to the Ergon grid system," he said.
Besides generating income for the centre and saving the environment, Mr Sanderson said with the solar panel system, the centre could be self-sufficient.
"We, as a major user of electricity, will be supplying ourselves with our own electricity," he said.
Mr Sanderson also made sure to hire the locals for the job to help keep them employed.
"We hired Watkins Electrical to do the job because they're locals who have worked for us for 14 years and have recently started promoting the use of solar panel systems," he said.
