Star horse ready to shine in lucrative Winx Guineas
Caloundra trainer Stuart Kendrick has labelled Star of Michelin one of his best chances to snare a maiden triumph in a lucrative Corbould Park feature.
The three-year-old gelding will jump from barrier four in the renamed $125,000 Winx Guineas from 4pm at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on July 11.
Star of Michelin heads into the race, formerly the Sunshine Coast Guineas, as $2.70 favourite with Kendrick eager to add the Group 3 feature to his stellar list of major wins.
“I don’t think (I’ve ever had the favourite for the Guineas), so this is probably our best chance of winning our (Coast) Guineas and it’d be good to win the first one named after that great mare,” Kendrick said.
“It’s a really good race and a lot of very good horses have come off a win in this race so it’ll be a big thrill that’s for sure if we can knock it off.”
Star of Michelin enters the inaugural Winx Guineas on the back of victory last start at Eagle Farm and Kendrick said he “couldn’t be happier” with the gelding’s form.
He drops in weight to 57kg for the race with Dale Smith back in the saddle.
“He’s always shown a lot of ability and he’s been fairly impressive in some of his victories against some good horses,” he said.
“The big tack suits him at home and I think that’s a big key and I think everyone is probably looking at that factor that the big track is definitely in his favour.
“I think the mile at is going to suit him even better than the 1400m that he won last start.”
He said a wet track would be the main concern facing Star of Michelin.
“The only issue we’re going to have is that we’re probably going to be racing on a fairly heavy track so it’ll be just a matter of what horses get through that sort of thing,” Kendrick said.
“He’s never raced on the heavy before and there’ll be a lot others probably in the same boat.
“He has won on a soft track and he’s also trialled well on a soft track so it’s a little bit of an unknown but I’m hoping that he does handle it.”
Coast trainer Gary Duncan will also charge in the race, cheering on Wapiti and Love Express.
Meanwhile, local trainer Garnett Taylor will have Bold Assassin in the other major feature of the day, the $85,000 Glasshouse Handicap.
Kendrick also rated Winning Shot in race two as a good chance.
