Skate plaza ready to entertain

IF you are reading this early this morning there's only a few, very short hours to go until we officially open the Skate Plaza!

It's all happening at noon and everyone is welcome.

I'd love to see you there.

This is such an exciting event for Coffs Harbour's youth and all those in the community who've campaigned over the years to get this fantastic new facility.

But I think you'll agree that the final result was worth the wait.

It is so much more than a skate park. It's a place where people - of all ages - can meet and feel comfortable, as well as have an incredible time riding or enjoying all kinds of entertainment.

I sincerely hope it provides everyone with many, many hours of exercise and enjoyment.

There were a lot of people involved in getting us to the opening today and I'd like to take this opportunity to mention them as it's important that their contribution is heard about.

They are - my fellow Councillors, the City Centre Masterplan Committee, Coffs Harbor Extreme Riders Incorporated (CHERI), in particular, Terese Conlon, Bevin Newton, Matt Dean and Shane Conlon.

Plus the students from Orara High and Jetty High Schools and Dr Judith Wilks from Southern Cross University for their help with design. Also Enlocus skate designers and David Fish from NSW Police.

The main contractors were Precision Skate Parks and they were helped by the sub-contractors - G2 Architects, Arc Attack, Wardman Electrical, Michael Vangastel and AFF metal fabricators.

I should also thank the Council staff who had a hand in every stage of the work, particularly Cherelle Brooke and Nic Dodd. But also all those from Community Services, Survey and Design, City Works and Recreation Services.

Also I should thank the local bands who have donated their time and talent to perform at the opening today - and local youth radio station CHYFM for pulling all that together.

Thanks also to the other performers who are going to be helping mark the official opening - the Gumbaynggirr dance group, the ABA Crew, Social Concepts Dance Crew and Coffs Coast Parkour group.

Most of all, I'd like to thank the members of the Coffs Harbour community who have given their whole-hearted support to this brilliant new facility.
