Rally Australia calls for volunteers to help
ORGANISERS of next month's Coates Hire Rally Australia are urging more locals to sign up as volunteer officials for the FIA World Rally Championship event.
The event needs about 1400 officials to provide their help and expertise throughout the four-day competition and during final set-up in the preceding days.
Jobs available include officiating on sporting matters, spectator management, event operations, administration, results, media, drivers, management of officials' accreditation and scheduling, and technical scrutineering.
All roles are voluntary, but becoming a part of the Rally Australia family gives officials a chance to win great prizes, including:
- Flights, accommodation and entry to the 2016 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Prize includes a guided Pit Lane walk.
- Morning or afternoon flight opportunity in the Event Safety Helicopter, as it gets ready for stages to begin and watch the leading WRC cars as they compete.
Event merchandise and memorabilia from some of the world's best rally crews.
All officials receive an event shirt and hat and entry to the Officials After Party on Sunday night.
Being an official is a great way not only to be involved in a major international sports event but also to play host to the thousands of international and domestic visitors who flock to the Coffs Coast, said Rally Australia senior executive officer Wayne Kenny.
"Just as the officials helped create the fantastic atmosphere of the Sydney Olympics, we're asking local people to give a little time to do the same thing for the Coffs region," Mr Kenny said.
"There are jobs big and small and no special experience or expertise is necessary, although we'll always try to utilise the best qualities any official comes with," he said.
"It's a lot of fun, too. Many officials come back year after year and make strong friendships.
"They share in the satisfaction of helping stage something that the region can be truly proud and is seen on the world stage."
