EFFORTS are being made to contact the next-of-kin of a Papua New Guinean man who was killed in a horrific head-on crash on the Warrego Hwy.

Dalby Road Policing Unit officer-in-charge Sergeant Brett Stevenson said early indications were the 33-year-old man's sedan was on the wrong side of the road on Monday when it collided with a fully-laden cattle truck about 27km west of Chinchilla.

"A couple of witnesses said he just drifted over," Sgt Stevenson said.

He said the man's last known address was in Chinchilla.

The truck was carrying 117 cattle east from Roma when the collision occurred about 1.50pm near Columboola.

Dozens of the surviving cattle were either put down by council workers at the scene or herded to a paddock beside the crash.

The incident blocked traffic for more than three hours.

It was the first fatal crash on Western Downs roads for 2014.
