Moneghetti in Coffs half marathon

WHEN asked why he’s taking part in the inaugural Coffs Harbour half marathon on September 25, the response from champion distance runner Steve Moneghetti was pure and simple.

“Why wouldn’t you want to have a run in a place as beautiful as Coffs Harbour on a course that’s really enjoyable?” Moneghetti asked.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist is thrilled that race organisers have organised a fun run which he believes are back in vogue.

“Fun runs are certainly rising in popularity,” he said.

“I’m happy to be involved.

"It’s been a really long time since I’ve been in Coffs Harbour.

"I reckon it’s about 15 years.”

The fun run day, which is the brainchild of local identity Mick Maley, had Moneghetti intrigued the moment Maley told him of the idea.

It didn’t take long before Maley had attracted Pacific Bay Resort, Coffs Coast Travel, Key Employment and the Bailey Centre Service Station as sponsors and the four-time Olympian was impressed with the energy that the event had already created.

“It was late last year when Mick first got in touch with me about it. The new walkway had just been completed and I think that stirred him along to do something,” he recalled.

“Mick has always been keen to get people involved in being active and healthy while raising the profile of charities that benefit.”

Now 48-years-old, Moneghetti is still fit enough to mix it with the best over long distances but he added that anything longer than a half marathon (21.1km) these days is a big ask.

“I ran 45km in the Great Ocean Road marathon last Sunday and that absolutely smashed me,” he said.

“I think 12 or 13km through to about the half marathon distance is the right distance.

“It’s long enough that it allows me to settle in and have a chat with those that are running around me without the young whipper snappers sprinting off in front of me.”

While the serious athletes like Moneghetti will be tackling the half marathon, there are shorter distance events for people to enter.

Entries are being received for the 10km fun run, 5km fun run/walk and 2.5km fun run/walk.
