3.55: DARCI'S AFFAIR WINS THE GOLD CUP
Kembla Grange trainer Paul Murray is the king of Coffs Harbour this afternoon after he not only trained the winner of the 2017 Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Gold Cup but the second place getter as well.
Darci's Affair finished ahead of stablemate Gold Horizon for Murray to produce a rare quinella while Glitra finished third ahead of fast finishing local hope Youwaitandsee.
Murray was full of praise for Australia's winningest jockey Robert Thompson who again proved what a genius he is, getting the win from the extreme outside barrier.
"He (Thompson) had to use him (Darci's Affair) a little bit to get him across and I didn't expect the other horse to be where he was," Murray said.
The shocked trainer said today's feature event wasn't part of the original plan for the Darci Brahma gelding when the current campaign was being mapped out.
"We set him for the South Grafton but he just needed that second outing and he was spot on for today," he said.
COFFS HARBOUR GOLD CUP RESULTS
|1st||3. DARCI'S AFFAIR||$11.40/$3.10|
|2nd||5. Gold Horizon||$6.60|
3.20: As the field for the 2017 Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Gold Cup starts to enter the mounting yard, there's some furious punting taking place in the bookies' ring.
Pelethronius has eased a point to $2.10 but still short of the $2.25 that was being offered when the fixed odds market first opened on Tuesday.
The late money is coming for Wyong runner Mr McBat which has been backed in to $6 the win with the TAB.
Punters wanting to back a local runner can get $8.50 for Sofin, $41 for the Trevor Hardy trained Youwaitandsee while 100-1 is being offered by some for both Purrvosa and Onslow.
3.15: This is the second time trainer Wayne Wilkes has come to Coffs Harbour on Gold Cup Day and collected the prizemoney in the Daniel Baker Sprint.
Wilkes won the feature sprint a couple of years back with Danesiri and today he repeated the effort with Shotgun Roulette.
"We set her for this early on after the Country Championships and she's come back first up and now she's won four out of five first-up," Wilkes said.
2.40: Trainer David Pfeiffer brought two horses up from Wyong.
The first just had a win while the second is the hot favourite in the 2017 Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Gold Cup.
Refuge Bay edged out Brett Bellamy's Boncosta with Menneke Belle not far behind.
2.10: Punters clearly aren't bothered by the big weight Pelethronius is being asked to carry in the Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Gold Cup.
If you want to back the top weight to win the Gold Cup which starts at 3.45pm, you'll be doing well to find a price better than even money.
About $7 is being offered for Mr McBat while the best backed local runner is Sofin and you can get about 13-2 in the old scale for the Shannon Fry trained mare
2.00: There was no mistaking the thrill of victory when I'll Miss You crossed the line first to win the Ken Howard Cup over 2000 metres.
Co-owners Julie Pratten and Gerald Nolan embraced with pure joy after their Teranaba mare edged out Meteorologist and Scotti Be Gotti.
RACE 4 RESULTS
|1st||I'LL MISS YOU||$25.50/$5.20|
|3rd||Scotty Be Gotti||$4.00|
1.25: ON the track there were some fast splits for the Blinkan Missit over only 800 metres and some action isn't far away for Park Beach Plaza'a Fashions On The Field.
The first categories about to be judged are the best dressed male and most stylish couple. Follow the Coffs Coast Advocate's Facebook page for some live footage from the Fashions stage.
But on the track it was Arise Augustus that proved to be the sprint king, flashing down the outside to overcome and Aspiring and the early leader Plateau Gold.
RACE 3 RESULTS
|1st||2. ARISE AUGUSTUS||$10.90/$2.90|
|3rd||1. Plateau Gold||$1.70|
12.50: It wouldn't be a day at the races at Coffs Harbour without jockey Raymond Spokes riding a winner.
Spokes piloted the Paul Smith trained More Thunder to victory in the Holcim Merv Mercer Mile.
This is two Coffs Harbour wins in two races to start Gold Cup Day.
Spokes knows every inch of the track and he used that knowledge to keep the Onemorenomore gelding in front over the final 100 metres even though it was obvious his mount was tiring.
"We had a lovely run, cosy and we just got the gap at the right time," Spokes said.
"He'd had enough but he'd done enough to hold them off."
RACE 2 RESULTS
|1st||6. MORE THUNDER||$6.80/$2.60|
|3rd||3. Dagga Boy||$1.90|
|4th||5. Bold Looker|
12.15: ONE race down and already there's a local winner to cheer about.
The Coffs Harbour trained Dorawin held off Hard Mechandise and Blinkin Artie to win the Ooh Media Showcase Maiden Plate.
RACE 1 RESULTS
|2nd||3 Hard Merchandise||$4.60|
|3rd||13 Blinkin Artie||4.50|
Dorawin's trainer Joanne Hardy said she believes the Danewin mare is looking for further than the 1300m she won over today.
"She just settled off the speed a little bit today but she hit the line very, very strongly," Hardy said.
"I think this mare's going to get over a mile long term."
12.05: It's a healthy crowd already at the track for Cup Day.
NOON: THE weather gods have smiled on Coffs Harbour for the Gold Cup raceday and not before time.
In the past Coffs Harbour Racing Club officials have been forced into finding an alternate date or running on wet tracks for the feature event on Coffs Harbour's racing calendar but not today.
About 7,000 racegoers are expected to head to the track this afternoon to catch a dose of Cup fever.
The first race starts at 12.10pm and the first Fashions On The Field parade of the day begins not long after that.
The major event, the Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Gold Cup, will see the field jump from the barriers at 3.45pm.
Among the 16 horses in the Cup field are four local hopes including second favourite Sofin, trained by Shannon Fry.
