Last Aussie hope puts aside husband's police probe

ARINA Rodionova will carry Australia's flickering singles hopes into Wimbledon battle tonight, desperate not to be distracted an alleged extortion investigation involving her husband Ty Vickery.

Rodionova shut downing questioning over Hawthorn forward Vickery and former Richmond forward Jake King's arrests on Wednesday.

The Russian-born baseliner issued a statement before an interview today, saying: "Just before we start I'd just like to say all the questions please only regarding tennis, my previous match, my current match and I cannot speak about my personal life."

The Herald Sun understands police are probing whether Vickery hired King to stand over a third party he was in dispute with over a six-figure sum.

The former Richmond teammates were arrested on Wednesday afternoon. King was later charged with six offences, including extortion and making threats to kill and inflict serious injury.

Vickery was released without charge but is continuing to assist investigations.

Asked how she put aside a "rollercoaster" 24 hours which included her maiden grand slam victory and her husband's arrest in Melbourne, Rodionova said: "I didn't have to put anything aside.

"I was just focusing on my match. I had a great day yesterday, obviously worse day today and tomorrow's another day."

Rodionova will tonight face Kazakh Zarina Diyas for a place in the third round.

"Definitely very excited. I'm really looking forward to it," qualifier Rodionova said.

Winless in three attempts against the former world No 31, Rodionova said she would trust coach Cara Black's game plan.

"I'll have to speak with my coach and have a plan for it," she said. "Sooner or later it has to turn.

"I had a good feeling about my grasscourt season and I was hoping to do well this year.

"I'm feeling great and my body is in the right condition.

"For me, fitness is important bedause I had quite a few bad injuries.

"Being healthy and able to play quite a few tournaments without being interrupted by injury is very important."
