Hartsuyker: ACCC response to fuel pricing inadequate

COWPER MP Luke Hartsuyker has criticised the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on their response to his recent correspondence on fuel pricing in regional areas.

In a further letter to the ACCC, Mr Hartsuyker has questioned the time taken by the consumer body to address the issues of significantly higher fuel pricing in areas within the Cowper electorate.

"It is clear that the fuel market in Coffs Harbour, and other parts of Cowper, is not working," Mr Hartsuyker said.

"It shouldn't take the ACCC two months and another investigation to determine what we all know to be reality - that fuel retailers in regional areas, such as Coffs Harbour, do not appear to be responsive to movements in international fuel prices."

Mr Hartsuyker added, with the significant levels of traffic on the Pacific Hwy, it is unreasonable for the ACCC to continue to link higher prices with a low volume of fuel sales and high distribution costs.

In his correspondence with ACCC Chairman Mr Rod Sims, Mr Hartsuyker has again expressed community frustration at the speed of the ACCC's response to the ongoing controversy regarding regional fuel prices.

"The residents of Cowper deserve immediate action. Every day that the ACCC delays action is another day of higher cost impacts on family budgets," he said.
