Go bananas at the 2012 show

OUR beloved local produce, the humble banana, will this year have a category all to itself in the farm produce competition.

Sponsored by the Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga Banana Growers Association, prizes up to $250 will be awarded in categories including Heaviest Bunch, King Banana and Novelty.

Local farmer Mal Husna is one of the many exhibitors in the category.

He has a long history with the Coffs Harbour Show, with his 62.5kg bunch dwarfing the competition for Heaviest Bunch of Bananas in 2006.

"Banana farming is hard work," Mr Husna said.

"After a long day it's good to turn around and think, 'we got great results'."

Mr Husna began the long selection process for his show entry in December, when he earmarked promising bunches for special attention.

"The competition is in good spirits," he said. "And it's always interesting to see what other farmers are growing."
