GFC is a world away

WHAT financial crisis?

Judging by the crowds at Coffs Coast's major shopping centres in the week leading up to Christmas it appears people are continuing to spend.

Despite reports of financial doom and gloom, the spirit of giving at Christmas time has led to an increase in traffic and sales at the leading centres and retail outlets.

Toormina Centro has reported that traffic is up 5% on the same time last year.

Marketing manager Amy Whiteley said Centro's management team is thrilled with the results leading up to the festive period.

"We've had a fantastic lead-up to Christmas," Ms Whiteley said.

"We're unsure if the extra traffic actually means extra sales at this stage but we couldn't be happier at the moment."

Steve Gooley, general manager of the Bachrach Naumburger Group which owns Park Beach Plaza, said that sales are slightly up at that centre.

"It was good that the reserve bank did the right thing and the banks did the right thing by dropping interest rates," Mr Gooley said.
