Driver drank half a bottle of bourbon

A 22-YEAR-OLD motorist crashed his car after drinking half a bottle of bourbon.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court this week, Alexander Michael Coogan pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said Coogan had driven off the side of the road and crashed his vehicle into a light pole in Deebing Heights.

The accident took place on May 16 about 10pm.

When police arrived, they found Coogan sitting on the side of the road being attended to by ambulance officers.

His smashed vehicle was being loaded onto a tow truck.

The officers noticed that Coogan seemed distressed and that his speech was slurred.

He was taken to hospital for a blood test and recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.157.

Coogan told police he had consumed half a bottle of Jim Beam and that his last drink was 20 minutes prior to the crash.

He was convicted, fined $600 and disqualified from driving for six months.
