Diagnosis takes no hostages
NIGEL Brennan experienced true adversity during his time as a hostage in Somalia, but he believes a diabetes diagnosis can turn a family upside down in the same way.
The former NewsMail photographer and his sister Nicky Bonney drew comparisons between the stress they faced and the fear created by a diabetes diagnosis, at the Juvenile Diabetes Action Support Group’s fundraiser on Saturday night.
Support group president Barry Fleming said the audience was glued to every word the guest speakers said.
“We raised just on $3000, and Nigel helped by auctioning two of his prints on the night which brought in $500,” Mr Fleming said.
Money raised at the Christmas in July dinner will be used to send children with diabetes on a special camp at Bucca, at the end of the year.
Dietitian Fiona Graham said she was impressed with both guest speakers and the atmosphere.
“If you could choose a sister, I think you’d want her to be like Nicky Bonney,” Ms Graham said.
She said the food fitted the festive theme, and everyone had a great time while helping out the good cause.
“It was a lovely evening, and it will make a real difference,” she said.
