Dad avenges son with hammer after dog bite

A COAST father terrorised a woman and destroyed her property with a hammer after her dog bit his son on the stomach.

Michael James Sawdy was working in his garage when his son approached him crying with blood on his shirt.

The boy and his friend told Sawdy a dog at a nearby property had bitten him.

Sawdy's wife took their son to hospital while he armed himself with a hammer and walked to the dog owner's home, telling her that he would kill her dog.

He smashed two of her fence palings and two terracotta hanging pots.

Sawdy then swung the hammer at the woman's Holden Barina, smashing the back window.

The woman was in hysterics during the vicious outburst with the 000 operator she called unable to understand her.

She handed Sawdy the phone who gave his name and address before handing the phone back.

The woman further claimed Sawdy had been yelling racial slurs at her during the incident.

When police spoke to Sawdy about the incident, he said he felt his actions were justified.

He pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to single counts of contravene police direction, trespass and three counts of wilful damage.

The court heard Sawdy's son was now scared of dogs and had to see a psychologist.

Although the location of the dog attack was unknown, Sunshine Coast Council had since "destroyed" the animal.

Sawdy's lawyer said his client accepted his actions were "not appropriate".

Acting Magistrate John Parker told Sawdy, "I can understand how upset you were, however you over reacted".

Mr Parker fined Sawdy $700 and ordered he pay $640 in damages.
