Letter to the Editor - April 6: Climate coral crisis
THE Mid North Coast is facing a climate catastrophe.
Coral is being bleached within the Solitary Islands Marine Park.
We hear warnings by respected scientists that sea rise could be much more than previously forecast thereby placing greater areas of Coffs Harbour at risk of flooding and becoming potentially uninhabitable.
All of our Mid North Coast Rivers will experience greater and higher floods because of erratic and increased rainfall and higher tides. How can we possibly afford to flood-proof our riparian floodplains and their infrastructure?
Yet the Turnbull-Joyce government is playing to the climate change deniers and moving funds from one agency to another to create the effect, but not the reality, of "innovation" and action.
We need serious, broad based and urgent action to prevent a global climate catastrophe.
In 2015 the Coffs Harbour City Council joined other local councils with an innovative emissions reduction plan.
Now the Coffs Coast Climate Action Group has felt the need to establish a petition for the CHC to implement its plan. All of our councils need more state and federal support to implement urgent climate action.
