'I couldn't just say to the lady cross your legs and wait'
A MIDWIFE missed out on winning $3000 at the Gympie races when her name was drawn while she was helping deliver a baby at hospital.
Saturday's final race day for 2012 featured the annual cash giveaway for Fashions of the Field finalists from throughout the year and entrants were required to be at the turf club for the draw.
When Melissa Orrman's name was called out her friends explained the situation, but rules were rules and another name was drawn from the hat.
This time it went down to the wire.
While there was no chance of Ms Orrman leaving the delivery room to claim the prize within the five minute mark, it took Tania Clem four-and-a-half minutes to reach the stage - just in the nick of time.
Friends eventually located Miss Clem, none the wiser, in the cafeteria.
Looking a little stunned she accepted the $3000 cash to the obvious disappointment of all entrants hoping for another redraw.
When The Gympie Times caught up with Ms Orrman yesterday, she laughed off her loss.
"It's disappointing that I wasn't there," she said.
"The thing was, I was at work and couldn't just say to the lady cross your legs and wait because I'm going to collect the $3000.
"I certainly wasn't going to abandon the woman while she was in labour."
While she admitted it was a big shame to miss out on the prize, Ms Orrman shrugged it off as "one of those things".
"Life's too short to worry about things you missed out on. You have to work when you're rostered on and that's all there is to it."
Second prize winner of the Maleny Tropical Resort Getaway was none other than Kevin Liddicoat, whose wife Michelle took out the big cash prize two years in a row in 2010 and last year.
The pair definitely has the midas touch, coming up trumps with only a couple of entries in the draw each year. They are well-known among racegoers for taking out the couples' fashion category and say it's all for the fun of dressing up together and being in it to win it.
