Baby and family reunited with hero team that saved his life
A BABY boy and his family have been reunited with the Territory health workers who saved his life after he went into severe heart failure.
At just five-weeks-old William Francis was presented to the Belyuen health clinic in cardiogenic shock on March 2.
It was a traumatic day his parents Ben Francis, and Sharjah Parker say they will never forget.
"He had suddenly turned very pale, almost grey, so we rushed to the clinic," Ms Parker said.
"His heart rate was up to 300, so something was very wrong."
William had a rare, unstable heart rhythm, and his body was beginning to shut down.
He was quickly transported to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) by CareFlight.
The Paediatric, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Department teams at RDH worked together tirelessly through the night and the next day to stabilise William and prepare him to be flown in the evening for specialist treatment at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. But when the RDH neonatal retrieval team and the CareFlight crew were loading William into an air ambulance jet, his condition deteriorated as his heart entered a life-threatening rhythm.
Dr Simone Martin, Suzanne Munro and Meagan Stewart had to deliver multiple shocks and provide CPR to keep him alive.
During the long flight, while the medical team worked hard to keep William's heart pumping in the back of the plane, CareFlight pilots up the front were contending with extreme weather and a difficult landing.
After the six-hour journey, the exhausted team landed in Melbourne and had managed to stabilise William's heart and hand him over to the specialist cardiac team waiting for them.
Seven months later, William is back home in the Top End with his family continuing his recovery.
"From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank everyone single person who helped save our gorgeous little boy," Mr Francis said.
"It was touch and go for a while there. We can't imagine a life without him."
