Argo named Best Picture of the Year at Oscars
AUSTRALIA'S three Oscars hopefuls went home empty handed today.
Hugh Jackman, Jacki Weaver and Naomi Watts fell short in their respective, tightly contested categories.
It was little surprise Jackman lost out to Lincoln star Daniel Day-Lewis, and his Les Miserables co-star Anne Hathaway was shoe-in to win Supporting Actress over Weaver.
Argo was the big winner of the night, taking home gold statuettes for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing.
Director, producer and actor Ben Affleck was moved to tears during his acceptance speech, during which he thanked those in Hollywood who helped him get a leg up in the industry.
Ang Lee was the surprise winner for Directing, pipping favourite Steven Spielberg at the post.
The bookies were also on the money in most of the categories, with Christoph Waltz winning Supporting Actor and Amour winning Foreign Language Feature.
Quentin Tarantino won Original Screenplay for Django Unchained, which star Waltz described as poetry in his acceptance speech.
