Victorian bushfire residents return to see ravaged homes

RESIDENTS of fire-ravaged towns in coastal Victoria have been warned further flare-ups could be on the way.

More people returned by bus yesterday to visit Wye River and Separation Creek after the Christmas Day fires destroyed 116 homes. Authorities hope residents will be able to return permanently next week.

The Bureau of Meteorology said temperatures would remain high but winds should ease this week, which would make it easier for firefighters to contain the blaze.

Residents in surrounding towns have been warned the bushfires could threaten their properties if weather conditions change.

The fire threat is expected to remain for months.
