Signatures gone, but union calls for cash for tips
PAYING for a meal on your credit card may no longer need a signature, but as Australia moves to a PIN-only system, the hospitality union wants diners to keep leaving cash tips.
The national change to PIN-only credit cards on Friday could yet mean more diners will continue to use credit at restaurants and cafes.
But United Voice has asked diners to bring along some cash anyway, and if they're had "excellent service", to tip the staff in cash to make sure it reaches employees.
Union acting national secretary David O'Byrne said while tipping on a credit card was "okay", cash tips were more likely to get to the front of house or kitchen staff, rather than get mixed in with business takings.
